View from the top of the Duomo

After we waited in line for over two hours we finally climbed the steps to the top of the Duomo in Florence. Our train for Rome left around 3 in the afternoon and we didn’t get up to the top of the dome until after 1:30 because the line took so much longer than we thought it would. There are a few hundred stairs to the top and they are pretty steep and narrow – people weren’t as ‘big’ in the 1300s obviously and I doubt they thought thousands of people would pay 8 Euros for the pleasure of climbing up steps and checking out the view so the thought of making the stairs two way never dawned on them.

The views from the top of the dome on the outside were spectacular and here you can see the whole town of Florence spread out beneath my feet. In the foreground and off to the left you can see the Campanile (bell tower) that you can also climb to get views of the historic cathedral.
